When you get a drywall quote, somewhere in the line items there's a finish level. It sounds like upselling jargon, but it's an actual industry standard, and picking the wrong one is one of the most common reasons a homeowner ends up unhappy with walls that were technically installed correctly.
Level 1 and Level 2 are rough finishes. Tape is embedded in compound, maybe one thin coat over it, and nobody worries about ridges or tool marks. These belong above ceilings, in mechanical rooms, in garages, and behind tile — places nobody will ever look closely.
Level 3 gets one coat over the tape and fasteners. It's the right call under heavy texture, because the texture is what you're actually going to see. Ask for Level 3 under smooth paint and you'll see every joint.
Level 4 is the standard for most finished residential rooms. Two coats over the joints, feathered out wide, plus coats over every screw hole and corner bead, then sanded smooth. Under flat or eggshell paint in a normally-lit room, a good Level 4 looks perfect. For most bedrooms, hallways, and living rooms, this is what you want and paying for more is wasting money.
Level 5 adds a full skim coat of compound across the entire wall surface, not just the seams. The reason it exists is texture, not flatness: joint compound and paper-faced drywall absorb paint differently, so under the wrong light you see a subtle band where every joint runs, even when the wall is dead flat. A skim coat makes the whole surface one uniform material.
So when do you need Level 5? Three situations. First, raking light — a wall running alongside big windows, or one washed by directional lighting. Second, gloss or semi-gloss paint, which reflects every difference in sheen. Third, large uninterrupted wall planes and cathedral ceilings, where there's nothing to break up your eye's path along the surface.
If none of those apply, a well-executed Level 4 will serve you better than a rushed Level 5. Honest contractors will tell you that. We'd rather do a Level 4 properly than take your money for a skim coat you'll never notice.
